Occupational Certificate: Software Engineer
SAQA ID: 119458

Dive deep into designing, developing, and deploying comprehensive software solutions. Beyond coding, you’ll lead teams, from Software Testers to Applications Programmers, shaping innovative applications and systems. Ready to architect the future of technology? Your path to becoming a tech visionary starts here.
This course is meticulously crafted for individuals aiming to master the art of building robust, scalable, and efficient software systems. A Software Engineer researches, analyses and evaluates requirements for existing or new software applications and designs, develops, deploys, tests within scope of work(debugs) and maintains software applications.
NQF level 4 qualification
Graduates can work as Software Engineers, Software Developers, Programmers, Software Testers, DevOps Developers, or in advanced cloud and application development roles.
A Software Developer focuses on writing code and building applications based on given requirements.
A Software Engineer works at a deeper level, designing how software systems are structured, solving complex problems, and ensuring applications are scalable, efficient, and wellengineered.
The Software Engineer qualification is the more complex and technical route, suited to students who enjoy problemsolving and working with advanced software concepts.
Yes. Software Engineering is more advanced and focuses on complex system design, deeper problem‑solving, and how large software systems work together.
For students who did not study programming or IT at school, it is recommended to start with Software Development, which focuses on building strong coding fundamentals before progressing to Software Engineering.
You will learn how to analyse problems in depth, design software solutions, write and refine code, and develop more complex systems. This qualification places a stronger emphasis on logic, system thinking, and problemsolving than entrylevel software qualifications.
The Software Engineer qualification is completed over 2 years (24 months).
The minimum entry requirement is an NQF Level 4 qualification (Grade 12). While prior exposure to IT or programming is helpful, this qualification is designed to develop your skills progressively over time.
