We’re proud to celebrate Etienne Du Toit, who placed third globally in the AI Pro category of the Digital Skills Cup, a global competition powered by the Leading Learning Partners Association (LLPA). With participants from across the world, this challenge tests knowledge and application in key areas like AI, cybersecurity, and development.
CTU Training Solutions was proud to host and support the national rounds of the Digital Skills Cup in South Africa, encouraging students, alumni, and digital professionals to take part in this high-impact global challenge. Participants were invited to compete in one of four categories – AI User, AI Pro, IT Developer, or IT Security, with the top scorers from each country advancing to the global finals. Etienne stood out during the national phase and went on to represent South Africa on the international stage with excellence.
Etienne’s interest in artificial intelligence began during his university years, where he took AI as a subject and completed his honours project in the field. His passion continued to grow as he explored different machine learning algorithms and pipelines, eventually leading him to pursue a master’s degree in computer science, with a focus on natural language processing.
Interestingly, he didn’t set out with a dedicated study plan for the competition. “I didn’t explicitly prepare for it,” he said, “but through my master’s studies and hands-on experimentation, I had already built up the knowledge I needed.”
Placing third on a global stage came as a surprise. “It was amazing news! With so many countries competing, I didn’t expect it at all,” he shared.
While he handled most of the questions confidently, he mentioned that some were specific to Microsoft tools, a few of which he hadn’t used regularly. Still, the overall experience was exciting. “It was fun and encouraging to know that so many people around the world are interested in AI.”
Etienne is especially intrigued by the development of world models, which he believes could significantly impact the future. As for day-to-day tools, he uses GitHub Copilot regularly and finds it incredibly useful. Reflecting on the journey, Etienne is already thinking ahead. His advice to future participants? “I initially thought I wouldn’t get far, but you never know what you’re capable of. Don’t underestimate yourself and keep pushing yourself to be greater.”
Congratulations once again, Etienne. You’ve made us proud and inspired others to pursue their passions in AI and beyond. To learn more about the Digital Skills Cup, visit: https://thellpa.com/digital-skills-cup
